The Dragon [Lawrence Gowan]

The Dragon

Just a little problem, out of hand
The consequence of supply and demand
Violate the laws of nature
End up with this awesome creature
Another mouth to feed that no one planned

Evil sire, breathing fire
Belching smoke and fumes
Behold the face of doom
We can't stop runnin'
The Dragon's comin'
Death defiant man-made giant,
The sum of all we killed
A living toxic will
We can't stop runnin'
The dragon's comin'

Fools will still deny the threat is real
Though the jaws are snapping at our heels
We tamed the wilds and raped the forests
Mowed down everything before us
Dressed our dreams in cloaks of chrome and steel

Maybe someday, we can't know when
Life will rise up again
And a new light will shine
On the dark ages we leave behind

Interpretation

The lack of concern shown to our environment by humanity leaves us with a challenge akin to slaying a dragon. The "consequence of supply and demand" (capitalism) has driven people to abuse the environment in the name of profit. Power plants belching smoke and fumes like the smoke from the nostrils of a fire-breathing serpent.  Some still deny that there is a threat, even though we see the signs of impending doom. Like knights on horseback wearing metal armor, our machines have made the clearing of forests quick and easy.  If we keep this up, we will destroy ourselves, although the Earth will eventually recover, and new life will take our place.
