The girls that I grew up with,
They were famous in the neighborhood.
They played real hard and the looked so good, yeah,
The girls that I grew up with.
The girls that I grew up with
They stayed out late in the summertime.
They came on wild but they turned out all right, yeah

The girls that I grew up with.
The girls that I grew up with
The girls that I grew up with

Made my way across the planet,
Seen my share of this old world,
But something pulls me like a magnet.
My heart stays loyal to the local girls.

The girls that I grew up with,
They taught me how to dress and how to come on tough.
They made a man out of me when the going got rough,
And I learned about living, I learned about love
From the girls that I grew up with.
The girls that I grew up with
On exit number nine

Exit number nine
Exit number nine
Exit number nine.
On exit number nine
Exit number nine
Exit number nine.

And when they come to bury me, I got a spot in mind:
Underneath a cherry tree near exit number nine.

Interpretation

The girls that I grew up have always had a special place in my heart. They were a little wild, but they turned out all right.  I leaned a lot from them, about living and about love. I've traveled the world but keep getting pulled back to New Brunswick (exit #9 on the New Jersey Turnpike). When I die, bury me under the cherry tree (where no doubt there are some special memories).
