Pilate's Dream [Dennis DeYoung]

Pilate's Dream
Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice

I dreamed I met a Galilean
A most amazing man
He had that look you very rarely find
The haunting, hunted kind

I asked him to say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again, he never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
And next the room was full
of wild and angry men
they seemed to hate this man
they fell on him and then
they disappeared again

Then I saw thousands of millions
crying for this man
And then I heard them mentioning my name
And leaving me the blame

Interpretation

Jesus Christ Superstar recounts final days of the ministry of Jesus Christ. Prior to Jesus being turned over the the Governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, for trial (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 13), Pilate has a dream.  He wakes and tells his wife of his dream, which foreshadows the upcoming meeting. He is haunted by the thought that billions of people would eventually know his name and blame him for the death of this innocent man.
