Summertime [Dennis DeYoung]

Summertime
Written by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin & Dubose Heyward
Lead Vocals by Dennis DeYoung

Summertime, and the living is easy
The fish are jumping, the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich, your mama's good looking
I said, hush, little baby, don't you cry.
One of these mornings, you're bound to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings, and take to the sky
But until that morning, nothing's going to harm you, no

With your daddy and mama standing by.

Interpretation

Porgy and Bess takes place in the 1920s in Charleston, SC. Catfish Row was abandoned by the whites. Now poor black people live in the run-down houses. In one house couples are dancing, and Jasbo Brown sits at the piano. Clara, the wife of the fisherman Jake, sings a lullaby to her little son.

The lyrics to this lullaby offers a vision of hope for the future to the little baby.
