Guns and God [Lawrence Gowan]

Guns And God
Written by Lawrence Gowan

Take a look at the million crosses
Planted in the field
Take a look at the streets around you
And tell me what's the deal
For so many there's a battle raging on
And they'll never rest in peace until it's won

Guns and God are forever
Guns and God
Just remember
You're never going to know this world without 'em
Guns and God, oh yeah

Raise your fist and salute your forces
And crush your enemy
Make 'em pay for the pain you've suffered
For all the hurt you've seen
They deserve to be escorted straight to hell
So feel justified and know that you've done well

Guns and God are forever
Guns and God
Just remember
You're never going to know this world without 'em
Guns and God, oh yeah

The bell tolls for the fallen hero
Lying on the ground
Night falls and the skies all light up
Better pray you'll not go down
Is it too late to turn this thing around?

Guns and God are forever
Guns and God

Just remember
You're never going to know the world without 'em
Guns and God, oh yeah

Interpretation

People have an intrinsic need for God and yet also seem wired to kill each other.  The millions of dead marked by crosses in fields around the world are a testament to the brutality of war.  We have battles raging in the streets of cities as well.  We have God-fearing patriotic citizens cheering the armed forces and calling for revenge on our enemies for pain they have caused us. Instead of showing mercy and forgiveness, we seem determined to send them straight to hell. Church bells ring for fallen soldiers, revered as heroes, while people in war zones look to the skies at night for the light of tracer bullets and explosions.  We pray for safety in a world we created where guns are as much a part of life as God, and seems it will always be that way.
