King Of The Road [The Falling Wallendas featuring Todd Sucherman]

King Of The Road
Written by Allen Keller and Scott Bennett
Lead Vocals by Scott Bennett

Try to catch some winks on a cardboard bed
Thrown out of the boxcar by a bull named Fred
'Welcome to Chicago' as he kicked me in the head
That is what he said

Mixing up some ketchup and water in a glass
The short order cook slung me all his floor scraps
Radio announcer comes in with a news flash
Roger Miller's dead
Long live the king, he said
I wish I were in bed

I’ve got a pack of cigarettes
But there ain't no room to let
I promise not to make a peep
If you'd only let me sleep
Here

Met a chick at Iggy’s whose shirt said little breast
She confided that it was her family crest
Said she wanted it to be a praying mantis
I crossed my legs and hoped for the best

Do you want some head
Let me sleep in instead

I’ve got a pack of cigarettes
But there ain't no room to let
I promise not to make a peep
If you'd only let me sleep
With you
But no
I’m the king of the road

Interpretation

It's not easy being homeless, hitching rides in boxcars on trains.  No food, sleeping crowded with other vagrants, just wanting to get a little sleep.
