Heart in 3 [Glen Burtnik]

Heart in 3

Words and Music by Glen Burtnik
Vocals by Glen Burtnik

Like a game of cat and mouse
One pursues the other tries to hide
There's a paw pushed in the knothole
Grabbing at the occupants inside

But it's all right
I don't mind
I can take my time
Cause I could break your heart in three
And I could shake you from your tree

One could be the artist
Just about the paint a masterpiece
One could be the subject
Slashing at the canvass in her sleep

But we'll get through
No matter what you do
I can wait for you
Cuz I could break your heart in three
And I could wake you from your dream

Is it hard to find?
Is it just you're mine?

Maybe you think that there is an apple you're bringing to the party
Then can you believe I'm a 24/7/365 slave waiting on ya
You're putting the whip upon the back of of the king
You kiss the ring and then you pull down the shade and you unsheathe the blade
You seize the moment thinking how you're cutting me
But don't act too quick 'cause then you slip to the cup in the lip

But it's all right
If you don't mind
You can take your time

You could break my heart in three

I could break your heart in three
You could take it all from me
I could break your heart in three
If I could shake you from my tree

Break our hearts in three
Break our hearts in three
I could break your heart in three

You put the rip upon the back of the king

Interpretation

Why do you get so vicious trying to win every argument?  Sometimes it's like a game of cat and mouse where the cat clearly has the advantage and the mouse is hiding in fear of it's life so neither wins. Or it may be like an artist whose painting may be ruined before even starting because his subject is slashing at the canvas with words like a knife that she spoke while asleep. You treat me like a slave and then attack like an assassin when the opportunity presents itself. Don't you realize I could break your heart if I retaliate?  Our hearts are supposed to be one, as husband and wife, so if I do that, I'm breaking my heart, too, and we end up breaking it into three. Breaking a heart in two is bad, but breaking a heart in three is worse.
