Roses [Glen Burtnik]

I got this job up at the mill
But somehow I can't cover all these bills
No matter how I try

So now my baby's working too
So we can pay the rent that's overdue
And maybe we'll get by

But when she gets back home tonight
I'll find her some good way to make her feel all right

Roses for the working girl
Oh oh my baby, she's in the working world

She says she really doesn't mind
She's got to put in a little overtime
She knows that we'll survive

But still I wish that I could see
Why I can't earn enough to make ends meet
To keep this thing alive

But I'm ready with this red bouquet
And I'm hoping it can tell her more than I could ever say

Roses for the working girl
Oh oh my baby, she's in the working world
Roses for the working girl
Oh oh my baby, she's a working girl
She's a working girl

Oh, when she gets back home tonight
I've got her some good way to make her feel all right

Roses for the working girl
Oh oh my baby, she's in the working world
Roses for the working girl
Oh oh my baby, she's a working girl
She's a working girl
A working girl

Interpretation

It's often hard for a man who wants to support his family to accept that he can't make ends meet on his own. His wife is happy to get a job to make a little extra so they can get by, and he is so appreciative but still wishes she didn't have to. This is the love shared in many couples.
