When the Shit Hits the Fan [Glen Burtnik]

When the Shit Hits the Fan

Words and Music by Glen Burtnik

Superboy done lost his way
Superman can't walk
Wonder Woman gone gray

It's a grave new world
Hollywood spun the runaway
Better not come today
Put the gun away

Drink and drive
The way you planned it
Try and drive
But you can't understand it

One lucky bastard makes out like a bandit
While another poor sucker gets the sandwich handed to him
The world screened him
And you know you know you know
The bandit's done, sue him
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, yeah
Whatcha gonna do?

When the shit hits the fan
Will you play like a victim?
When the shit hits the fan
Will you drink it like a man?
When the shit hits the fan
You gonna blame it on the system
When the shit hits the fan
Will you face it like I can?

When the blood of your bro
Comes to you for advice

Will you stand as an example to start your thing twice
Will you spit out the truth if it cuts like a knife
Or will you hide the secrets of the mess you made of your life

But will you chill man
What will you show 'em
Will you share the experience with what you know to damn well man
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, yeah
Whatcha gonna say?

When the shit hits the fan
You better have your story ready
When the shit hits the fan
You gotta pull your own weight
When the shit hits the fan
Will ya keep the wheel steady
When the shit hits the fan
Or will ya burn out the brakes?

Will you burn out the brake?

Look ahead
Nothing there
You look behind
You see regret
You can't go back
You can't forget
You don't know how
To save yourself
To to to save nobody else

When the shit hits the fan
You don't know how
To save yourself
To to to save nobody else

You don't know how
To save yourself
To to to save nobody else

To to to save nobody else
To save nobody else
To save nobody
To save nobody
To save nobody
Nobody
Nobody
Nobody
Nobody
Nobody
Nobody

Interpretation

The world has gone crazy. How are you going to handle it?

Superboy lost his way.  Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in the movies, can't walk because of a spinal cord injury. Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on television in the 1970s is getting older. Hollywood portrays the solution to many problems to be a tough guy shooting all the bad guys. Drinking and driving is still a problem. Some people get all the breaks while others can't make ends meet, and often the solution is just sue the guy with the money.

So what are you going to do when life gets you down?  Will you play the victim or turn to booze, or will you face it?

If someone close to you comes to you for advice, what will you do?  Will you tell the truth about the mistakes you made, even if it hurts, and share your experience to help others, or will you hide your past?

You don't know the future, and you have many regrets in your past.  You can't save yourself, let alone someone else.
