Save Me [Dennis DeYoung]

Save Me

Baby, I think I'm going insane
My mind it seems is like some runaway train
I knew this life I've led would take its toll
But now at last I fear I'm losing control
Losing my soul, losing my soul

Oh and lately I keep dreamin 'bout death
The devil smiles as I take my last breath
Then I reach out to an angel in the sky
And as he takes my hand I start to cry

Save me, save me from all I've become
Won't you help me, I'm constantly numb
Save me, save me I've fallen from grace
Won't you help me, help me find my place

And baby I'm addicted I know
Each day I try just to let it all go
And though I know that I'm dying from the shame
Well here I go again like a moth to a flame

Save me, save me, save me I pray
Won't you help me, help me find my way
Save me, save me, I'm empty inside
Won't you help me, I've no place to hide

Save me, save me,
I so need your help
Won't you save me, save me from myself
Save me, save me, save me tonight

Come on tell me I'm gonna be alright

Interpretation

An addiction can take many forms, where it is drugs, alcohol, or any behavior that results in compulsive or obsessive pursuit of some sort of reward with a lack of concern over consequences.

Baby, I think I'm going insane
My mind it seems is like some runaway train
I knew this life I've led would take its toll
But now at last I fear I'm losing control
Losing my soul, losing my soul

An addiction can cause a person to feel like they are going insane, with no explanation for why they do what they don't really want to do. It's like a runaway train that will eventually lead to disaster, and you are out of control. It can be like losing your soul.

Oh and lately I keep dreamin 'bout death
The devil smiles as I take my last breath
Then I reach out to an angel in the sky
And as he takes my hand I start to cry

The addiction can enter your dreams, especially if it has started wearing you down, and you might dream about dying, as if that's the only escape. The devil smiling would signify that you are losing your soul, while reaching for an angel would be a desire to break free and gain redemption. To have the angel take your hand would signify that it's possibly, and tears are a natural response.

Save me, save me from all I've become
Won't you help me, I'm constantly numb
Save me, save me I've fallen from grace
Won't you help me, help me find my place

At some point you feel like you can't really even feel anything anymore, as the addiction has escalated, and all you can do is cry out for someone to save you.  To have fallen from grace is to have gone too far to be saved, which is a feeling of helplessness, but the continued appeal to be saved and to find a place in the world again signifies hope.

And baby I'm addicted I know
Each day I try just to let it all go
And though I know that I'm dying from the shame
Well here I go again like a moth to a flame

The first step in overcoming addiction, according to the 12 step treatment programs is to admit that you are addicted and powerless to overcome it on your own. Addiction inevitably leads to shame, as you are truly powerless and will always respond like a moth flying into a flame.

Save me, save me, save me I pray
Won't you help me, help me find my way
Save me, save me, I'm empty inside
Won't you help me, I've no place to hide

The second step in a 12 step program turn to a higher power for aid, so prayer is a natural next step. The addiction, which started feeling fulfilling now leaves you empty and vulnerable.

Save me, save me,
I so need your help
Won't you save me, save me from myself
Save me, save me, save me tonight

The only way free is to get help, to save you from yourself.

Come on tell me I'm gonna be alright

Once you get help, you can start to recover, with someone you can trust assuring you that you will be aright.
