Afraid To Love [Tommy Shaw]

Afraid to Love
Written by Tommy Shaw, Brad Davis
Lead Vocals by Tommy Shaw

Ever since I can remember
I've always had this image in my mind
The way my mama had my daddy seemed to lose that little twinkle in their eyes

Despite the fact
Love didn't last

I can't live in the past
No I don't wanna be
Afraid to love

There's cheaters and mistreaters
And the ones you end up beating all the odds
There's screamers and deceivers
And the ones who have been smiled upon by God

There's those
Like me and you
Who rise above
The deep dark blue
I swear I'll never be
Afraid to love
Afraid to love

I've seen the high falutins reinvent the institution of romance
They shot it full of loopholes where there's trees and love don't even stand a chance

A little joy
A little pain
Like the sun shine
Like the rain
I'll never be like them
Afraid to love
Afraid to love
Afraid to love

Interpretation

I don't want to be afraid to love, even though I can never forget how my parents lost the love they had. There are all types of people, and I am one who will not be afraid to love. Even though the idea of romance is being redefined by the cultural elites, I will hold onto my old fashioned vales and take the good with the bad and stay committed to the one I love for life.
