She burst onto the stage before her scene, swearing elegantly
Well, she was too good to be true and too true to be good
But a lady with a past needs a man with a future
Drawn to the flame of this aberration
Forgetting that trouble starts out as fun

There’s no point in memorizing the words
We’ve all been cast in the theater of the absurd

Horror and relief are never far from each other
Sometimes a shock is required to know you’re not dead
She came with a warning you couldn’t heed
She’ll swallow you whole and then spit out the seeds

There’s no point in memorizing the words
We’ve all been cast in the theater of the absurd
There’s no time for run throughs, we’ve already begun
Just step into the spotlight, baby, you’re on

I asked her, “What time is it?” She said, “It’s now”
I said, “Perfect, cause ‘never’ ain’t ever started a thing”

No snare in stolen words well rehearsed
Ad Lib Everything
We’ll brave every scene unseen in our grand cabaret

“La da dee, la da dee” sing it with me
Dance with abandon, no choreography

No need to learn the words, it’s all absurd
Is anyone alive at all?
This is a casting call
Join in the overture of the orchestra’s swoon
We’ll float past the floodlights, eclipsing the moon

Interpretation

As we move through life, we are making it up as we go along, like acting in play but ad-libbing everything. In a new relationship, this seemingly perfect girl turns out to have a past, and you realize you're walking a fine line, but you forge ahead, deciding the reward is worth the risk. Life isn't as easy as memorizing the words or learning the choreography. You're on stage for the world to see, and you just have to improvise.
