An Invitation

You are cordially invited to attend my final exit
All the town’s sinners will be there
Manor born and squalor torn at elbows to the fair
They’ll gasp and they’ll jeer at the unfortunates here
Miscreants out of time
Eyes to the ground, they’ll proceed to the sound of the clock’s final chime

The sands of time will soon be mine, my dear
A final gaze into your eyes
I’m that falling tear- oh, I’m that falling tear

Jewel of the Grail, cloaked under veils in a gilded cage of fear
The imprisoned kiss you can’t resist is here
Her howl in the night gave me the right to tangle with the swan
The moon, a distant voyeur, vanishes by dawn

The sands of time will soon be mine, my dear
A final gaze into your eyes
I’m that falling tear- oh, I’m that falling tear

High above these anguished moors, with stars perched to remember
The lights, now sealed, I’ll hold my breath ’til the glorious ever after
Here and gone, now beyond, but still with you forever

Interpretation

When I die, you are welcome to attend my funeral. My friends are all sinners (isn't everyone?) so you will find yourself in good company. Both rich and poor will be with me in the afterlife and will laugh at the people still alive and gazing downward as they plod through life.

Like a precious jewel set in the Holy Grail, yet hidden in a gilded cage, constructed of our fears, is a final kiss for my lover, imprisoned yet irresistible. She cries out in the night as I move on from this life to the next, and the moon, which was there watching before vanishing when the sun comes out.  The stars in the sky will also disappear but will remember. I will take my final breath and hold it, anticipating the glory of eternity in Heaven, where I will still be with you forever (in memories for awhile, and in Heaven forever after).

My love, I look forward to a final gaze into your eyes. I feel like I'm that tear that is falling from your eye.
