A south-side brick bungalow
In a lifetime long ago
When I was just a lad of seventeen
I was searchin' for connection
To the big machine

Feelin' lost like everyone
Thinkin' I was the only one
Like a tiny spoke in a wheel, just spinnin' round
I was lookin' for direction
When I heard that sound

(And I came alive)
And it was all I'd ever needed
(And I was revived)
When the rock began to roll
(And I survived)
And now when I feel defeated
I hear The Best Of Times
And the music lifts my soul

Just east of midnight
I can hеar the late night radio
And like a sеarchlight
It will point the way
Just east of midnight
I can hear the world in stereo
And like a lifeline
I will save the day
So I got me a vehicle
A second hand miracle
Just a set of wheels with a dashboard radio
I was cruisin' down the airwaves
In the afterglow

(So I turned it up)
'Cause it was all I'd ever needed
(I turned it up)
When the rock began to roll
(Now I'm all grown up)
And now when I feel defeated
I remember all the times
When the music made me hope

Just east of midnight
I can hear the late night radio
And like a searchlight
It will point the way
Just east of midnight
I can hear the world in stereo
And like a lifeline
I will save the day
Just east of midnight
I can hear the late night radio
And like a searchlight
It will point the way
Just east of midnight
I can hear the world in stereo
And like a lifeline
I will save the day

Just east of midnight
I can hear the late night radio
And like a searchlight
It will point the way
Just east of midnight
I can hear the world in stereo
And like a lifeline
I will save the day

Interpretation

Dennis reflects on his early years, discovering music and dreaming of the music business.  Let's break it down verse by verse:

A south-side brick bungalow in a lifetime long ago, when I was just a lad of seventeen
I was searching for connection to the big machine. Feelin' lost like everyone, thinkin' I was the only one, like a tiny spoke in a wheel, just spinning round. I was lookin' for direction, when I heard that sound

Dennis has many times recounting the story of walking down the street in the Roseland neighborhood where he grew up and heard Chuck and John Panozzo playing music in their home, so he stopped by, and that formed the seeds of what became Styx.

And I came alive, and it was all I'd ever needed. And I was revived when the rock began to roll. And I survived, and now when I feel defeated. I hear The Best Of Times, and the music lifts my soul.

He had suddenly found what he was looking for in life. Eventually they moved on to playing rock and roll music and finally became Styx. They had a rough road to their eventual success, but they survived.  Looking back at the what was the best of times, including a song The Best of Times, it lifts his spirits.

So I got me a vehicle, a second hand miracle, just a set of wheels with a dashboard radio.
I was cruising down the airwaves in the afterglow.
So I turned it up, 'cause it was all I'd ever needed. I turned it up when the rock began to roll. Now I'm all grown up, and now when I feel defeated, I remember all the times when the music made me hope.

He bought a second hand car, just enough to get to the gigs, with a radio so he could listen the the music they loved.  Years later, those memories still bring back a send of hope that kept them going at the outset.

Just east of midnight, I can hеar the late night radio, and like a sеarchlight, it will point the way.
Just east of midnight, I can hear the world in stereo, and like a lifeline, I will save the day.

"East of midnight" could mean late at night, just after midnight, when the hands on the clock, if overlaid on a compass with North at the 12 o'clock position, so perhaps 2:00-3:00 AM. Listening to late night radio, in stereo (which was gaining popularity at the same time as Styx, as the move from AM to FM radio for popular music took place) can be just what we need.
