Welcome to Hollywood [Glen Burtnik]

Welcome to Hollywood

Walk right in the clinic has arranged to see you first
Hear the doctors make the game show come off unrehearsed

The coyotes howl
From the Tarzah hills
Underneath the mocha sky

Jesus was as tall as me
Now he's in the mall on Melrose
Welcome to Hollywood

If the clouds of grey and brown
Cancel out the sun
We'll fire up the tanning beds
And color every one

And the airbrushed girls
Melt like credit cards
And the sunburned cops and guards

And Elvis came alive again
Now we're killing time on Sunset
Welcome to Hollywood

Hypodermic beeper babies working off the phone
Never beens and tired icons sealed off in their home
Juist wanna be alone

And the sign above
Shadows everything
And the snake crawls down below

The stars are falling down tonight
The circus is in town forever
They're burning down the hills tonight
The world is falling in the ocean

Oh! Welcome to Hollywood
Welcome to Hollywood
Oh! Welcome to Hollywood

Interpretation

Hollywood is situated among hills that still have coyotes roaming, yet it is highly commercialized. You can find a Jesus lookalike in the mall or Elvis seemingly back from the dead. Girls who look too good, probably from plastic surgery, where they might just melt in the hot sun.  People go to the tanning spa on cloudy days to keep their perfect color. The Sunset Strip is a popular tourist destination, as are the game show tapings, and it's like the circus is always in town. There are others who live there but aren't part of the stereotypical Hollywood scene, along with former stars isolating themselves after years of being in the public eye. Wildfires in the forests are common, and earthquakes along the San Andreas fault lead to theories that the coastline might fall into the ocean.
